Fredericksburg afternoon
This afternoon turned into another one of those memorable C-170 experiences.
As we drove into the airport to go flying in the 170, Ina and I saw a couple of 170s on the ramp at Fredericksburg, Texas' Gillespie Co. Airport, T82. We stopped and looked for the owners thinking we might know them but could not find them in the usual spots where pilots hang out. So we drove on up to the hangar and rolled -15D out and took off.
As we flew past the 170s on the ramp we noticed the owners were standing beside their planes. We decided to land and go see who it was. But before we could turn around, an unmistakeable voice on the radio identified himself as none other than George Horn. We parked alongside the two other 170s and got out to find both George and Jamie Horn from Spicewood and Kevin and Marcie West from San Antonio.
We had just seen George and Jamie at the 2008 Flying M Ranch Fly-in yesterday at Reklaw, Texas, so it was a total shock to see them at Fredericksburg today, about 50 miles the wrong way from home for them. They and the Wests had tried to meet for lunch at the Airport Diner, http://www.hangarhotel.com/index.html, but missed the 2pm closing time by quite a bit.
We ended up talking for several hours about planes, trips, families, and no telling what else. Before we knew it, the sun was getting low on the horizon and the Horns and Wests took off for home. Ina and I still had not really gone flying yet so we made another memorable sunset flight ending with a couple of GPS approaches into T82 just as it got dark.

George is letting the finish return to the original patina it left the factory with to help mask and counter the point reduction from his latest of a growing list of modifications from the factory original.W.J.Langholz wrote:The plane in the middle could use a little polish......![]()

Richard, just reading the above posts and didn't realize you and Ina made it to the greatest aviation spectacle in Texas (Reklaw). Sorry I missed you. I saw Bob Snowden a couple of times and of course George, Jamie & Roulette. Stop by the hangar (12 South, B) when you are next @ GPM.

I walked down to your plane a couple of times but did not see you. I saw Jaime but not George. George saw Ina while I was out looking for you and George. It all worked out ok, they came to Fredericksburg on Sunday.
I thought I had finally caught George in a mistake after all these years. When I walked up to their plane, I noticed the master switch was on. I thought, Aha! Busted! Then I looked down on the floor and saw George's cell phone with the charger plugged into the cigarette lighter. Damnit, he meant to do it. I should have known.
We were only at Reklaw for a couple of hours. We had to get back to Fredericksburg for a wedding at 4pm that afternoon, we thought. Best wedding I ever went to, a retired Air Force Colonel with 3000+ hours of single engine fighter time. Cool guy. Should have known Harry would throw a great wedding. The wedding announcement stated the wedding would start at 4pm sharp. What actually happened was the BAR was open at 4pm. The wedding wasn't until 6pm and by that time the whole crowd was in full party that lasted until 10pm. Had kinda slow start Sunday morning but it was worth it.

Speaking of spectacles, George I thought I would cut you some slack since you had to endure the "expert" w/ 30,000 hours
I like the additions to your plane
