The International Cessna^® 170 Association

I see a lot on this site about how to do or what can I do to the 170. I have not seen or found where anyone actually talks about flying. I mean really just flying. Is the 170 that boring of a trainer to fly? Has the cost to and or the goverment put a clamp on our minds? I found a deal on a 170 and ended up with it and lurk or poke around to see what other people are doing here on this site. I see a lot of talk about the plane but nothing about the joy of flying it. I like reading about things you can do or things to think about doing but have not found any reading on just good old flying . Has the part of atcually flying gone to a keyboard,tv,couch, boring election count down, keep it to yourself or uh what do ya mean! I would like to hear or read some flying stories or real stuff.

Well, this IS the "Hangar" .... where maintenance discussions are posted. But I'll move this to "The Pilot Lounge" where any topic is germane.

Squaretail, while my bird is indeed a "Squaretail" I do enjoy flying it whether on vacation, to flyins or just out burning up $4-$5 gas. As an example two weekends ago I flew Ole Pokey up to the Cedar Mills Flyin on Lake Texhoma and met some friends as well as meeting some new acquaintences. Weather was great and so was Ole Polkey and the flyin Then last weekend (Thurs-Sun) I flew Ole Pokey to the best damn flyin in the Southwest (IMHO) at Reklaw (hosted by fellow 170 members Dave & Marcia Mason) . A record crowd and number of planes ( I think) based on what I observed. Got to meet a lot of new folks, see a bunch of friends and look at a multitude of different types of planes (and folks ) I assume this is what you mean by how we 170 members enjoy the ownership and operation of our planes.

I'll try and answer.

People don't need help enjoying flying a 170. It is great!
You can find forums on flying/destinations/flyins almost anywhere, or you can find type specific
stuff like backcountry flying on other forums. That is the beauty of the 170, does anything.

THIS forum is great because people generally need help with upkeep and maintenance on 50+ year
old airplanes. Also if you want to modify the airplane for a specific need, this place is great.
That is where I need most of my help and I find it here!

As gahorn said we still have plenty of topics on flying.

Or you could become a member and read our quarterlys, where as in the latest issue a member usually babbles on and on about a trip they took.

We have been enjoying doing our pre season deer scouting. In our land of square miles of nothing it sure helps to find the general area the deer are hanging out in this year. You also get to see havalina and sometimes new Democrats that have just arrived and are making their way north.
At this temp and altitude the 180 lyc sure makes it nice.

I have four flying stories from my last four weekends:

The first weekend I took a 14 year old boy up for his birthday along with two of his friends. Two of the fathers came by to take pictures. We had fun flying over their school and taking turns letting everyone fly. A birthday I’m sure he will never forget. The following weekend was spent flying my wife home from the Oregon coast after she spent the weekend with her teacher friends - she is a high school languages teacher. She was staying in one of the teacher’s $700,000+ beach home. The teacher with the fancy beach home was letting the other teachers know how much everything cost. My wife kept her mouth closed until near the end of the weekend when she asked if someone could take her to the airport so I could pick her up and fly her home in our private plane. The other teachers asked “you have a plane?!” My wife felt pretty special being flown home. (A 35 minute flight verses a 1:50 drive.) The next weekend I flew with a friend down the Oregon coast. There was a storm off the coast that blew in large waves and a mist that looked magical from the air. It was one of my most enjoyable flights to date. Last weekend it rained so I worked on my car out in my hangar under the wing of my 170.

Why don’t we share our flying stories? No time. I waist enough time reading about how to improve/fix my 170. I don’t need another reason to waist time at something that keeps me from flying.

Today I flew in wind that was quartering at 5, across the runway at 18, and down the runway at 15G30 at three airports within ten miles of each other. The winds at 1500agl were from the west at about 40. I started with a few very short stop and goes on runway 26 at Boulder (15G30). We were down and stopped in 150 feet, and could have done better but for carrying extra speed for the gusts. Next over to Tri-County for some low passes in an 18 knot direct crosswind. I'm not up to that yet, so I just did a couple of passes to see what it looked like. I had some aileron left, but not much. Finally, back in Longmont I was one of two blue and white 170s in the pattern, and made what for me was a beautiful wheelie. What a way to finish up.
