Paint Schemes and "Period-Style" Interiors

G'day All,

VH-HVS is getting close to annual time. As well as the usual inspection, I am planning to send out the DG and AH for overhaul and depending on how time and funds permit I want to start renewing the interior. I hope to recover the side panels and hopefully the seats as well. I will leave the headliner as is untill I am ready to repaint the airplane as I don't want to replace it only to have to remove it again for painting.

I am having trouble finding any good pictures of the original interior pattern and colours for the '51. I am also considering doing the interior in a period style as opposed to strictly original but again have only been able to find limited pictures on the net. When I repaint the airplane I am thinking about a scheme similar to Doug Moury's but with '51 striping, so an interior complimenting those colours would be nice. (The pictures of Doug's airplane on this forum really sparked my interest in these beautiful old planes)

If anyone has any good interior shots, either original '51 or period style that they would post or email me I would be eternally greatfull.

Thanks in advance,

Noel

Noel,

Here's a link to some of the photos used previously by judges at 170 conventions. There's nothing specific to 1951 model interiors but should give you the flavor. Hope it helps.

Another question for the wise.....

The front seats in my plane are from a later model, they have square top back rests. Since there are so few 170's down here I don't like my chances finding original replacement seats.

Can anybody tell me if any early model 172's had the same style seat or am I stuck with the square tops?

I think the early 172 seats were identical to the 170 seats. If someone confirms this and you don't find what you are looking for in your area, let me know. I have the two original's from my '56 172 and we might work up a deal.

I believe the 1951 is the same as the 1950, which I have. My interior is pretty much original. The headliner has been replaced with a Cessna part, and I had the front seats re-done by an auto upholstry shop that specalized in restoring antique cars. They found reproduction fabric from 1950 era General Motors vehicles matched. I bought a half a hide of upholstery leather that matched what was original.
The color scheme on mine was light gray and brown, with brown leather trim and piping. I am attaching a photo I happen to have on my work computer that shows the interior somewhat, even if the dog is in the way. If need be, I could take some more detailed photos. Hope this helps.

Thank you the offer Ole Pokey, however I think the freight costs to Australia may be prohibitive.

Bruce,

Thanks for the pic, looks like you have a little champion co-pilot there and a really nice interior in your 170.

I have found some pics on the net and combined with the pics in the link Miles posted and of course Bruces I have some idea on what I might do....

170 brochure....

I am thinking similar style to this....

colours something like this...

Here is my dash as it is now...

I am thinking of keeping the dash the same when I do repaint the plane which would compliment the new interior if done like the photos.

By the way the website I got those pics from is well worth a visit and I must say that Spartan Executive is one nice looking machine.
