Dubya, I wonder if you're not misleading us. Surely that must be his sister!

Nor exactly Mothers Day but what we were doing the Sunday and Monday of the week before - - - We had some tornadic activity and many trees in our neighborhood went down taking down power lines and wrecking several houses,cars and boats. Fortunately for us the power pole that snapped off at the ground had the very top end just touching the big picture window of our bedroom. We were without electricity for 4 days because of the huge amount of damage to all the lines and poles.

We are so thankful that we had no fatalities or really serious {see "Update"}injuries.

Update on "Nasty Lil Storm" {it now has a name}........ I got a paged out on our VFD channel at 7PM yesterday evening. The 911 Dispatch needed us to go to an address less than one mile east of our fire station. The report was a tree down on a vehicle. We responded and were advised by the Deputy on the scene that there was a pickup truck under the massive tangle of branches from the top of this huge oak tree that had evidently gone down in that storm almost two weeks ago. The pickup was almost totally hidden from view. After I had taken several large limbs out with our chainsaw, we discovered that this property owner had been killed inside the crushed vehicle. I knew him casually but it was a real shock to think that for almost two weeks, no one had known he was missing. I felt badly that I didn't go into his drive that morning while I was going about the neighborhood checking on other folks. I may not have even been able to see the truck because of the intense rain and that huge pile of treetop but I wish I had taken that short 1/4 mile trek. It was not a happy ending

Sorry to hear about your neighbor flyguy. I just got home from the annual volunteer recognition dinner hosted by the Sheriff's Office to recognize the many volunteers who dedicate their time, equipment and expertese to the Sheriff and the citizens of our county. The United States was founded by volunteers, our freedoms defended by volunteers and our everyday lives made better by volunteers of all sorts. I have had the good fortune to work with volunteers for over thirty years and still wonder at the willing dedication exhibited by these fine citizens. I also find myself worrying that we are running out of the sort of individual willing to volunteer - the youngest person in the room tonight was over 40.

Bob, your assessment is right on target. Our local fire district has about 100 volunteer firefighters and I estimate that 80% of us are well over the age of 55 (20 of us are on the high side of 65). Our coverage area has 15,000+ residents, 4 small towns and an area of 450 square miles. With those demographics we should be able to field at least 1000 firefighters. Not happening. It seems difficult to get younger men and women involved. That usually happens after they have experienced a fire in their home or a volunteer coming to assist them after a medical emergency or using the "Jaws of Life" to extricate them or family members from a serious MVA. Too many people assume that when they move from the "big city" that all those amenities provided there will be just the same. The youngest of them are very intent on the laid back lifestyle of lake living and, till something bad happens that directly affects them, can't be bothered. They are surprised to find out that we, the VFD, aren't a "paid" fire department, but are their neighbors. We are those people who are willing to give of themselves for their community. They are surprised that ambulance service isn't "just around the corner" and 8 Deputies a shift, can't cover 1000 square miles like the Police department did in the cities where they lived. We really need new "blood" but have little clue how to get folks to understand the need.

I was a volunteer firefighter in college. I clearly remember the looks of consternation on folks' faces when they asked us "oh, you are volunteers?" without any real thought as to what they were saying. Of course, being young, I used to get upset at this. As you say, people apparently never wondered why they could afford that 3000 square foot house in the country - of course all the services must be the same, right?

I believe that even today there are more volunteer firefighters than paid ones in the United States, and it will always be that way I reckon. Our local folks here work hard to be professional but they could use a few new recruits to help them out.

Well, it's not a 170 (the 170 is still in the shop in Mena), but it does have a round tail. I spent a couple of days with my mom on Mother's Day and we had a great time. She would not, however, go flying with me. After 39 years of being a pilot she's gone up with me maybe five times total. Having no accidents and never damaging a plane in over 6500 hours has no bearing whatsoever on her opinion of flying. At 87 years old, she can do whatever she likes and she does not like flying. She does go to the airport every time I depart though. She loves to watch me take off, maybe she just wants to make sure I'm leaving town, I don't know.

I think it's totally unfair for anybody to have more than 1 nice plane ,........although the 195's have started to come down a little in price, I just don't know if I could handle one

I don't think it's unfair... I just wish for EVERYbody to have a 195 AND a 170. The only consolation I can offer myself is that at least I have a RED B-model.
