Insurance quotes

I just got the quote for my insurance this year and got a pleasant surprise. My rate for the same coverage went down by a little more than $300.00. The difference is a different underwriter, Phoenix vs.AIG. I must admit I have never heard of Phoenix before and was wondering if any of you have had any experience with them. My agent raved about them and that is when the cynical side of me raised a red flag. I just don't want to have a hassle if I ever do need to make a claim.

Our County Risk Manager has chosen Phoenix to provide insurance coverage for the Sheriff's Office aircraft - past several years now.

My buddy started his Debonaire with the tow-bar attached and suffered a prop-strike. Phoenix paid for the engine teardown, repair and reinstall...and it even took a new prop and different governor because the old one was no longer available....so it also took a new spinner. Phoenix didn't complain and promptly paid the bill.

Two months later he mistook a street for a narrow runway down at Progresso TX (he's not the first person to do that...it's a bad airport) and when he hit that 6-inch curb doing 60 mph it wiped out the nose gear, prop, and engine again. Phoenix hired a recovery team to get the plane over to McAllen and install a new nosegear, prop, another engine-tear-down and rebuild. No problems with Phoenix on that time either, however with two claims inside of 6 months they did raise his premium $150. He was very happy.

The only problem he had with them was he then moved onto an airport community with a grass runway and Phoenix wouldn't insure it on a grass runway, so he had to change insurance. (Or maybe they just used that excuse to dump him?)

My policy with them states; provided however, that no coverage shall apply under this endorsement unless the aircraft is operated on or from airports designated as such by the proper government authorities having jurisdiction over cival aviation. In other words if it's listed as an airport by the feds you are covered.

An exclusion to that exclusion :?: :!: , of course is in the event of an emergency (not precipitated by the choice of landing area, I presume).

I have Phoenix insurance and they had no problem when I moved from a paved 3900 ft public airport to a 2200 ft private grass runway. Rates stayed the same.

I was with Phoenix some time ago. Very easy with which to work and, at that time, the least expensive. Went through Falcon Insurance.
