The International Cessna^® 170 Association

Gentlemen, I am a totally new member. I became one because I am in the market to purchase my first airplane. I have plenty of flying experience, but have never owned my own. An original J-3 was the second aircraft I ever flew back in 1963, the first was a Piper Colt. I am going to purchase a taildragger and the C-170 seems to fit the bill for what I want. I am posting this to elicit comments, advice, suggestions, etc. with regard to the C-170. I welcome all contributions and I thank you for them.

I am a recent purchaser of a 170B. Like you, I joined the association prior to purchase -- and it has served me very well prior to and after I bought my airplane. I intend to be a member for many years to come.

I think it best to choose an airplane based upon your intended "mission." The 170 isn't the best bush airplane, nor is it the heaviest hauler, nor is it the fastest cruiser, nor even the best trainer. Yet it is very good in all of these roles. Very, very good. I chose the airplane type based upon these factors. For me, its 4 or more very good airplanes in one classic and attractive package.

So this is a testimonial more than a comment or advice. You'll find the support here to be among the best in the GA community--which is also a factor to consider. Welcome aboard!

Where are you located? If there are folks on the forum here that are near you, you might get some offers to come take a closer look at (and maybe fly) the various models.

Welcome DJ and good luck with your hunt. I'd read the history of the 170 so you have an idea of the order of manufacturing and the as George suggests the differences thread. They are all great airplanes and as Scott suggests a good all around airplane but maybe not the best in any one category. Fact is I can't think of any one aircraft that is the best in several categories.

As you read and learn, and there is a lot here, just ask questions. We've probably heard the question before and have prepared answers in the can as easy as pushing a number. Seriously we have probably heard it before and discussed it somewhere but don't be afraid to ask if you can't find the answer or just want to talk about any particular subject.

Don't be persuaded to buy a red plane however. Green examples have been known to be faster.
