Look out Del! part two

I recall a thread from a year or two ago where I believe gahorn posted a weather map that indicated that Del Lehman was about to get pounded with some bad weather. Looks like he's gonna get it again.

Del and a whole lot more. If you look at the very nice shade of magenta (ice) running from Texas to New York. I'm right in the middle of it at the eastern PA border. After Del gets done with the storm it's coming my way though the worst snow will probably go a bit north. That of course leaves the ice for us.

Of course Steve F. will get pounded up there in New England sometime after I've had enough of the fun but if you live in New England like Minnesota and Wisconsin, you should expect bad weather. :)

It's a toasty +19 with a wind chill of -3 here in north central TX. I'm sure all the folks from Wisconsin & Pennsylvania are laughing at the television news folks down here with all their on the scene reports of sleet & snow. However, those here for the SB are seeing how quickly TX weather can change from the mid 70's (late last week) to the teens now and as Bruce said, the worst of this storm looks to be northeast of TX. We will all be ready for spring :D

Five inches of light and fluffy in three hours here. Just no place to put it.
Piles are astronomical.

Both the field where my 170 is and the one with my Champ have
have both stopped plowing - no place to put the snow and the banks
are to high. The cost to plow for the few based planes that fly this
time of year just does not warrant it.

It is funny to see the news people in Houston in heavy coats and hats though.

WARNING: If you are a dis-placed southerner with your airplane up nawth/outside during all this.... you'd better get out to the airport and sweep the snow off your airplane before the added weight does damage.

1:00 pm in Jeff City, MO - 9" snow on the ground and the TV weatherman says we have another 9-15" on the way. Going to really test the structure of our new hangar. Wind is blowing 15 mph. Looking for 40+ mph this evening and tonight. Weatherman says it's the first time the official term "blizzard" has been in the forecast for central MO. Got plenty of wood for the fire and we're hunkered down for the time being, but will have to get out in a day or so to put out more hay for the herd.

I have a friend with more money than he knows what to do with. We flew to Truckee, Ca. one winter and had to tie the airplanes down outside. During the night it snowed heavily. When we arrived at the airport in the morning the aircarft were deeply covered in a thick layer of fresh snow. Myself and the rest of us pee-ons got out our snow removal gear and started to dust off our aircraft in preparation for departure. My well heeled friend demanded the FBO arrange for a boy to clean the snow off his aircraft. We were all standing by our aircarft when the 16 year boy arranged by the FBO showed at our friend's aircraft with what is best described as the typical car window scraper on a stick. My friend has skylights in the roof of his 182. Of course there was a crust of ice underneath the fresh snow. The eager 16 year, old with the ice scraper, wanting to do a good job, started bashing away at the ice on the roof of friend's plane and smashed a hole in both skylights. The rest of us departed without much of a delay.

We're currently in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan - looks like we're going to miss all the fun. 1-3 inches forecast here in Escanaba. Won't even notice it! You guys have all the fun.

I attempted to come in to work yesterday, but the change over from rain to ice happened very quickly, and came down hard for about 30 minutes before it changed to snow. I turned back home, and glad I did. Most people around here don't drive well in this stuff; when they realize their tires are spinning, they give it more throttle, when they realize they are out of control, they slam on the brakes 8O
Wild weather. We set record highs on Saturday and Sunday, 76 and 74 degrees. Monday at noon, it was 62 degrees and no wind. 24 hours later, it was 15 degrees with wind gust 30-35 mph.
Down to 10 degrees last night, forecast high of 19 today and 4 degrees tonight. Wish I had a cab tractor.
We have 2 Jersey milk cows. They don't do well at all in the cold. Not as hardy as the beef cattle. So, Tina made them some "coats" during the last cold spell. Wish I could post a picture of Lolly and Princess in their spongebob apparel

I have to quit reading about all the crappy winter cold weather you guys are having. Time to go out and pick a couple of ripe bananas to put on my morning bowl of granola cereal. Oranges later.

Yep, more ravages of global warming.

Before Ina and I could depart Grand Prairie, TX Municipal Airport (KGPM, 1/2 way between Dallas and Ft. Worth) yesterday, I had to talk the airport operations manager into opening the airport back up. They had it notam'd closed because there were patches of ice and snow on the runway. They had no idea what braking action reports were, they just closed the airport.

It took awhile to talk the ops mgr into driving the runway to make a braking action survey but he finally conceded. His idea was he didn't want any pilot operating on his runway (liability issue). I had just returned from Alaska the day before and told him if his method was used everywhere else in the country, most northern airports would seldom be open in the winter. I suggested he let the pilot be responsible for the decision whether to operate at the airport.

Once we did the runway survey and determined the braking action was "poor", he called the info into the FAA who cancelled the "closed" notam and re-opened another notam with the braking action info we had just determined. Then we were on our way. The tower dutifully informed me braking action was poor. I thanked him and concurred with the report.

Taxi and take-off were uneventful and the flight to Fredericksburg was very nice in excellent VFR conditions. Cold but nice. Fortunately the Southwind worked great and we were toasty the whole trip.
