Finally got to land at my place this winter. 12" of VERY slick ice (and howling winds

) was like landing with crosswind gear (I think...

).
Had to add power for rudder control. It slid sideways then backwards, so I gave it another blast of power to stop it!

I don't recommend this unless you know exactly the area you're on. One fisherman's ice hole, and it'll ruin your whole day, if not just the gear box of your bird

. I brought it in to the tree-line shadow where a little snow helped with the taxiing.
Here's a shot of my wife Linda, with the plane 60' feet out.
If all holds true for a week, it's party time next Sunday. Hot dogs, chilli, coffee, hot chocolate, and a good warm bon fire 2-20-'11.

15A,
Howinell do you know that that's your wife? The way she's bundeled up, how are you sure?
As a matter of curiousity, what kind of a seaplane is that shown on the lake taxiing on the water?

BL,
To answer your first question, I'm really not sure. But if she's willing to be with me, I'm all for it!
And that's a Mariner. Home built. Looks like a 2200 float with wings and a Subaru motor. This guy flies the living heck out of that thing and is definetely a 'lake fixture'. Although he flies a 757 regularly, this is his plane of choice!

Of COURSE he's a 757 pilot! If he were an Airbus pilot, after one landing in the water...he'd have to retire and go on a speaking-tour!

Years ago (late 50's) we used to go ice fishing on Saginaw Bay (Michigan). My Dad was flying the 170 then. There would be 10-20 planes on the ice. You kind of slid around, but Dad could handle it. Sometimes the plane rotated 180 deg. and a touch of power stopped the sliding. We could sit on the wheel, punch a hole in the ice (not easy, it was about 16" thick), and catch a nice bunch of Perch and maybe a Muskie or two. Mmmmm Good!
