The International Cessna^® 170 Association

I was in Thailand recently and came across these and thought I’d share. There were these 3 plus 4 C-180’s (military versions) all in pretty bad shape but all worth restoring if someone had the time and money.

The 3 are ? L-19 s ??
and 4 C 180s ?

I was at Korat AB, Thailand a few years ago and there was two or three Bird Dogs there along with a 170 with a few modifications. At the time the Bird Dogs were flyable.

Didn't Air Repair buy up some L19's from Thailand and assemble them here and sell them as new L19's. Apparently they were in containers etc...

A fleet (16, I think) of Pakistani L19s were offered about 8 years ago. I rec'd a sales-offer, but the contact's English and knowlege of their condition was so poor that his credibility suffered. Plus, the airplanes were to be purchased IN Pakistan....shipping/importation was up to the buyer. No way I was going to be interested...besides....they were GREEN!

Not that these were for sale, and not that I have the time and resources to complete a project like this it’s just a fun day dream. I can think of thousands of obstacles to gaining ownership and them getting them home and making them legal even before you started to restore them. Then only knows how long they have been sitting outside in Thailand on the cost at that. Just a fun day dream.
I did have fun looking at them and playing airport bum in Thailand. I asked our handlers if I could walk over and take photos and know body seemed to care where I went and what I took pictures of.
I guess I have never looked at L-19’s that close before to notice some of the things I noticed about these. I am assuming that these were unmodified or at the very least lightly modified. The biggest thing that stood out to me was the pull handles. I didn’t know why these would have been on the L-19’s but are an STC on the 170’s. Also the flaps are very different from my 49’s. I don’t know what they look like on B’S.

Did the L19 have a stepped firewall?

It doesn't look like it. I have a photo of the engine compartment but can't upload if from my I pad.

Why is that?

Neither tied-down nor chocked nor controls-locked. Looks like they're possibly being cannibalized. Pitiful.

In this picture the firewall looks Stepped, in some of the photos the cowling looks like it fits this firewall configuration and in other pictures the cowling looks like the rear edge is not stepped.

Are these two 180s?

In your post, immediately before my last post, the second picture looks like the top cowl has a "dog leg" in it, just above were it meets the lower cowl??? Maybe it's just a shadow, or I'm crosseyed. The latter is most likely, especially this evening; Christmas PARTY!!! . AND I've already picked out the gal I'm takin home tonight. My smokin hot wife

I don’t know the difference between a 180 and 185. I thought it was engine size.

I believe, around 1965 , they put the extra rear wind in the C 180 as well as in the C 185.
