The International Cessna^® 170 Association

My Dad, who has passed away, gave me a wooden propeller and I would like to know some history on it. He once owned a Cessna 150 and a Cessna 170. He loved flying, and I thought this prop was off his original plane. Don't know now. It is made by Miller Propeller Co., Dallas, Iowa, TC 843, SER555, MOD702CA, 44. It is 72" long, has 6 holes in hub, brass on the tips and along leading edge plus has red tips. Can anyone tell me anything? It looks like it was once used on a plane because you can see "nose cone" marks on it! Thanks in advance for any help you might give me!

The 6 bolt holes tells me it was not used on the Cessna 170. Cessna 170 engines stock from the factory had 8 bolt crank flanges. I'm not at expert on Cessna 150s but doubt if a wooden prop was used on it. Likely your father picked up the prop just to hang on the wall which is exactly what I'd do with it and think of him if I were you.

While I've never heard of a Miller propellor the length of 72" would indicate it might have been used on a Piper Cub type aircraft like the Cub, Taylor Craft, Aeronca or Porterfield with about a 65 horsepower engine. Owning a Cub myself I know it is not listed on that aircrafts Type Certificate Data Sheet but that doesn't mean Miller didn't have approval to install it on one.

I do not ever remember hearing of a "Miller" propeller. I would suspect it is made for some sort of homebuilt experimental airplane.

That propeller T.C. is now owned by R. Hunt Propeller Co, 6400 Tripp Rd, China Michigan 48054. It was used on engines rated at 65 HP @ 2600 RPM. The type certificate was last revised April 24, 2008.

Here's a link to the Type Certificate for that prop. (Notice that under Note 2 that by serial number that particular prop is an approved one....while many other low serial numbers are not.) This prop appears to have a long list of prior owners, including Tarver, AeroMatic, Flottorp, Universal, and UniVair.
