The International Cessna^® 170 Association

I have a 170B with the Lycoming O-360A1A engine. I need to replace the existing propeller. I am considering the Hartzell HC-C2YR-1BF/F8477-4 for the replacement. If you have experience with this combination, please tell me what you think. It would cost me an additional 4.5 grand to do this upgrade, over the cost of a direct replacement. Do you think it would be worth it?

A good choice. I have a Yellow tag extra counter balance, you will need the STC from Hartzell and a set of blades, at your overhaul shop they will exchange your blades, over haul your hub and with a counter balance, put it all together and you should be set. Also no RPM restriction.

Thanks, Green Bean. By way of further explanation, the original prop is trash, both hub and blades. I can get an overhauled direct replacement for the original, which was a HC-C2YK-18F hub with F7666A-2 blades for 5 grand or buy a band new kit with the upgraded 80 inch from Hartzell for 9.5 grand. The kit includes the STC. Another consideration: This airplane has what appears to be original factory float fittings. I suspect that it would be pretty attractive for float application in Alaska and that might enhance the resale value. I don't have the complete history, but I don't believe it has ever been on floats.

If the inside of the wings and fuselage are green (zinc chromated) then it probably is a factory built float kit.

I have an O-360A1A Avcon as well ... and had to add the float kit! So consider yourself very fortunate, and me very jealous! I have the 74 inch Hartzell prop, so I've also been considering this upgrade.

I don't think the 80" prop STC comes fron Hartzell. In fact, when I spoke to them about it at the Anchorage trade show a couple years back they absolutely insisted that the 74" prop I had was the only legal combination. Well, obviously not the case.

Its my understanding that Dave Stoots here in Fairbanks owns that particular STC. The extra pull and elimination of the RPM restriction are very attractive.

I don't remember from your prop/hub specifications if your hub is subject to the AD that requires inspections and/or overhaul. If that's not the case, you might be better off selling your current prop assembly as a while. The 74" is very popular amongst RV homebuilders and others. I've already had one offer in town to purchase the prop right off my airplane! Simply put, selling your current setup and purchasing a completely new prop and hub may be the most economical.

Buy a ticket, come to Alaska and fly my 80 inch prop. It is a phenominol difference. You literally launch off the ground or water. Sell that prop to some homebuilder ad you will come out ahead
