Need a fuel cap

Post by rudymantel »

I need a vented fuel cap for my 170B. It's actually for my Javelin aux system but it's the same cap size as on the wing.
Does anyone know where I can buy one ? A used one would do.
(Am doing the annual and my IA snagged the cap I've been using as it's really an automobile cap)
Thanks,
Rudy

Rudy, tell your A&P that he's incorrect. The Javelin blueprints call for a gas cap that is a chromed, Gates Model 20. This is a vacuum-vented, automotive gas cap. If he needs to call me, give him my phone number.

At first blush, it seems like venting the tank into the cabin space isn't a good idea. Smelly, if nothing else. Is there an exterior vent for the Javelin tank, & this is a secondary vent?

Eric, the Javelin tank gas cap is external to the right side of the fuselage.
Javelin also had a belly-vent system as an option. (Not req'd equipment, but probably desireable.)

Ya know, I've seen Javelin tanks on 170/180's, & I know they fill up from outside. I wonder why I was thinking the cap (where you fill them) was inside? Too much high altitude ( above 1,000' AGL ) without O2, I guess.

Thanks guys- I'm now trying to find a copy of the Javelin drawing- I thought I had one but haven't been able to locate it-

I wonder if any chromed vented cap will do or does it have to be a Gates Model 20 ?

Deductive reasoning dictates that any chrome automotive cap which is not labelled otherwise IS a Gates model 20 cap.
