I have my 1953 Cessna 170B apart so that I can re-furbish the entire airframe.
What is the best way to store the wings?
I thought of hanging them in the ceiling such that they are parallel with the ceiling with the fuselage mount on the wing being one support point and one or two ribs in from the wing tip as the other supporting point.
If you have any ideas as to what would be a good method; then, please let me know. I want to protect them before they are re-furbished and also after they are finished before the airplane is re-assembled.
The other parts are small enough (except the fuselage) to stack up high out of the way.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
I have learned a lot from browsing through these forums. I have already collectd several good ideas as the best way to handle various parts of the C170.

Remel,
If you want to hang them from the ceiling, cut a couple 8 to 12 inch wide pieces of carpet, a few feet longer than the width of your wing, install two or three gromets in each end and use drywall screws to hold the wing to the ceiling. (not tight up to the ceiling) you would want to divide the wing into thirds and put the carpet on ribs. You can use basicly the same idea and attach to a wall. Or make a wing cradle if you don't mind loosing a little floor space.

Yep. Good suggestion. Make a cradle out of carpet shaped like a "U" and lay the wing inside the "U" with the leading edge down.

Thanks! I like your idea better than mine. I did not have a good way to attach to the wing tip area. I will get some carpet and fabricate the "wing sling" and attach it to the ceiling.
I suppose just about any carpet would do if it were woven and not made of plastic.
Any ideas on what kind of carpet so that I don't scratch or ding the leading edge?
Thanks again for all of your help and such a quick response.

Make sure to cover all the holes in the wings, especially on the upper edge. Things will automatically gravitate toward those holes. After a time, any foreign material will translate to corrosion inside the wings. Mud daubers etc., love openings where they wont be disturbed. Jon

I know what you mean about the dirt dobbers.
I had a couple of them in the wing when I took them off. I don't know how they got in because all of the inspection covers were on the wings.
I hope to get the wings set up for storage this weekend. Weather should not be a problem since it is all in my garage.
Thanks again for your help.

Remel, Looks like your plane and mine came off the line about the same time. Mine is a '53 model, N3035A, serial # 25679. Jon
