KX-170 volume control

Post by Joe Moilanen »

(Split from another topic -Mod)

Speaking of radios, the volume switch just went out in my KX170B on the NAV side. Anybody know where these are available? Does King still produce parts for these?

There are so many used units out there in the junk-bin that surely your avionics shop (or you) can cannibalize one.

One note of caution if you don't already know Joe is that when you remove the KX170/175 you only turn the allen screw 1/4 turn. Any more than that and you WILL break the on/off volume control. It's a poor design that has made more money for the radio shops and King than I'd like to think about.

This is unlike most other radios where you continue to turn the allen screw to remove the radio.
CAUTION - My forum posts may be worth what you paid for them!

Damn Bruce, I wish I would have read this post sooner. I did just that! And I still need a volume switch!

I have a KX-170 that I will trade for anything of value. It's supposed to be in working condition (but is not legal, as you know....only good for parts and listening/navigating.)

George,
Can't the KX-170 be made legal with the addition of the MAC face? I know the KX-170A can.

I have no idea. I like the present avionics in my plane and have no plans to add the KX-170, so it's up to anyone who can use it.

Thanks for the info lowNslow. I sent Gary an e-mail.

George, I'll try to find out if the volume switch is the same on the 170. Now that my bone head stunt removing it broke the channel switch also, I'll be looking for that also. I'll get back to you. The bakelite disc that broke is for the 118-135 so the 170 may have the parts I need. Gotta find out...

My volume went out on my KX170B last year and I got charged more than I thought was fair........I think $45 for the part. Overall it is such a good radio. I fly a lot of IMC approaches with only my KX170B and my garmin 496.

Robbie, what you meant to say is you fly the approach with the KX170B and use the Garmin for "situational awareness" ---right?
