C172/152 Spotting question

Post by smellysnelly »

Hi guys,

Probably not exactly the right place for this question but I'm struggling to find the info anywhere. I'm training to be a controller and one part is Aircraft Recognition. At present I can't see any way of separating C152's and C172's from side on pictures. Any thoughts??

Any advice gratefully received

Count the side windows. The 172 has a window for back seat passengers; the 152 does not (no back seat). I personally have more trouble differentating 172's and 182's at a glance.

What ever way you identify them just make sure the 170s with the nice round tails are given priority.

I had a controller at NORCAL keep calling me"Skyhawk 58B". I finally asked if they showed me as a 172 or a 170 since no one had asked what type A/C I was, and I assumed they got it from their data base from the N number. He said 170. When told a 170 was not a Skyhawk he said "close enough".

...and the 182's side rear window seems a bit longer and has softer lines (more curves) than the 172, in my estimation. There's a good profile at: http://www.chooseyouritem.com/airplanes ... 52784.html
