Hi Dave,

Have not started flying yet. Plan to leave Spencer MA on Sunday 4/20 at AM. Weather is iffy for Sunday but I think I can get started. From what I see in the early forecasts is looks real promising as a very large high is about to start coming across the country. I have allotted Sunday through Thursday to get there and if necessary will alter my route to go directly west and let a storm pass then head south. Run into this west to east pattern when we go to Oshkosh so am hopeful that five days will be sufficient. Got your private message and will respond shortly. I am all packed, courses entered into Duats, and plane ready to go!!!! The pictures have really added a lot to the anticipation. See you soon.

Also I can't wait to see if OLD GAR talks like he writes. :D

OLE GAR,

There are two things I have learned in the last month or so watching the Petit Jean area of Arkansas. This is a very pretty area of the country and you grow some of the nastiest weather I have ever seen. Thanks for the weather heads up!

It is still a way off but to me it looks like after this low that is approaching there is a two or three day gap of high pressure followed by a wall of lows that are in the Rockies now. If I can get behind the current low I think I have a decent window to get on down.

I called Petit Jean to and told them I was with the 170 orginization and going to fly in to ask if I needed a reservation. They signed me up for a camp site in the park not on the airfield. Is this right or should I cancel my reservation?

Harold.... just did a little checking... I don't think a motorhome can be on the airport, and that's probably why they put you in the park.

We bought our place here on Toledo Bend in 1988. The first two years we did lots of flights between here and the Kansas City area. Those little hilly piles of dirt stikin up out of the plains of Northern Arkansas one of the knarliest weather producing features in the eastern US. The sudden 2000' increase in altitude shoots the warm moist flow from the gulf right up into colder stuff and then it takes on a life of it's own. I've lost count of the times when I waited till late Sunday afternoon to leave here for KC and got "beached" by the clouds that I couldn't out climb or go around. Anyway - Fly safe.

It looks like the "low" has moved on and is diminishing. It gave us some real snotty wx this morning but now the sun is out and things are drying out.. I hope you have cavu and a tail wind for your flight.

The State Park and the Airport are ran seperately!

If you are flying into the airport and camping at the airport campground, then do not contact anyone!
I've booked the entire campground for Fri & Sat nights ($100 per night).

If you are bringing a motorhome or don't won't to camp with the rest of us (could understand this after reading some of these post), then you'd go to the State Park Camp grounds, located across the lake, from the airport campground.

N4005V - I think you do want to cancel that other campground reservation.

In past years motor homes were allowed to stay on the airport next to the airport camping area. However, this year, the park ranger decided that motor homes would not be allowed on the airport and would have to stay across the lake. That is why we decided to get a locge room and come in the car rather than the motor home. (since I can no longer fly, boo hoo

Well I guess SteveF started out this morning from MA!

The last 2 days have been gorgeous, which makes me a little nervous about next weekend.

Gar and I have decided to go with with burgers on friday night and catfish fillets / New England Clam Chowder on Sat, starting about noon. Or we might change it all up, who knows.

A lot of folks have asked what to bring. If you'd like to bring your favorite soda pop or a bag of chips, that would be great. Something simple that isn't hard to handle in the plane. The main thing is to bring yourselves!

If you are sleeping at the airport campground - bring ear plugs! The geese on the lake cackle all night long! And the coyotes, owls, and frogs, chime right in with them as well.

Anything else?

Dave,

Is there any water in the lake this year? I know it is pretty shallow, but it's nice when there is water there.

I know you're being funny! We've nearly drowned in water this spring! I just came in from assessing how much damage our flash flooding creek did to my fences and etc., while I was gone. Took away our foot bridge, two fence crossings, and some big boulders I was thinking of damming the creek with. Yep Petit Jean Lake is full to the brim!

Thanks AR Dave. I really messed up, the campsites are nonrefundabel. I suspect I can camp over by the lodge, or if sombody needs a campsite, I have one reserved.

N4005V, PM me your reservation information and let me see if I can do something! You'll want to stay at the Airport Campground weather you got that other place or not.

Spent today up at Petit Jean Campground! Sure have had some nice weather for 3 days! I was raking pine straw and had a few nats bugging me when the breeze stopped. If you have bug repellant you might bring it.

GASOLINE - Russellville is going to drop 100LL to $4.25 on Sat & Sun, just for us.
That'll be the best deal around here, they're cutting it .25 cents.
It will help me negotiate future deals if we fuel up at Russellville.
