Am putting in a new instrument panel and would like center stack radios. Where can I get a "Y" yoke for my '54 170B and how much trouble is it to put it in. Also, while the panel is out I thought I'd put in a new windshield. I kinda like the old post style look. Any suggestions on what kind to put in, like thickness, color, etc., or best place to get one? Any pros or cons to the one piece windshields?

I own your sister ship 2792C. I installed one of those Avion center stack radio kits back when it was easy to get approval.

I got my "Y" yoke from Delair. Had to send in my yoke and they converted it for me. I am very pleased with all the work they did for me. I also got their panel, as a blank, and made my own panel just as I wanted following their STC, (center stack). I have never had any problems dealing with Harry, and recommend them. By the way I also got their Lyc 0-360 STC, and had no problems or complaints with the installation, or any of the parts and paperwork I received. I put in a "one piece windshield", (all of them are), and would recommend removing the center strap. It is like climbing out of a cage when you remove the center strap and have a clean unobstructed view. The windshield will be thicker and does reduce noise a little. I didn't get mine tinted and I wouldn't recommend it. Wear sunglasses if you need shaded view. Jon

Thanks again. I think I'm gonna forgo the center stack radiio thing and just put them all on the left side below the A/S indicator...assuming they will fit. Ordered the one piece windshield as well.

As one who has longed for the center stack set up, I have seen numerous 170's that have been successfully modified to permit the center stack. Over the years, when reading or discussing this modification, the more modern control yoke configeration has been referred to as a Y yoke. I had been told a later model C-172 yoke would work and I thought someone said a C-150/152 yoke would work although I don't know that the 150/152 yoke would be as wide as the 172 yoke? The photo associated to the thread here indicates the yoke to be a U yoke rather than a Y yoke. Is there a difference or are they one and the same? The thought is that if a person wanted to make the major change to a different instrument panel/center stack, could one purchase a later model C-172 yoke from a salvage company and use it in the installation rather than having to purchase one from Avion (?) or similiar? Maybe the secret here is to purchase the unit from Avion or similiar because they have the STC (paperwork)?

We put a 150 "Y" Yoke in our 170 in 1982, works fine, only change was it lowered the point through the panel about 1 inch, which required the use of horn style control wheels. Center stack radios, the instruments on the left are on a shock mounted insert (removal flight instruments) the rest of the panel was solid. Aircraft Rebuilders of Long Beach, California was the builder and designer. The "Y" yoke conversion took about 1 hour to install from the 170 T yoke,(per cessna drawings), a much cleaner arrangement. Field approval on the above installation.

There is a Service Difficulty Report recently out on the "Y"/"U" yokes. Due to their open cental tube, and location below the windshield, they can accumulate water internally and rust. (The original "T" yokes do not suffer so.) There are reports that some have broken off in flight, accompanied by loss of elevator control. I expect an AD note at some point regarding them.
All the windshields are "one piece". If you install a new one without the reinforcing center strip you will have to comply with instructions to attach/reinforce them along their upper edges to prevent them from "popping" out of the aircraft inflight.
