MODERN ANTENNAS ON OLD TAILDRAGGER JU52

Post by MoonlightVFR »

I tend to see aviation through C 170 glasses since that is the only aircraft I really know.

So I was in a movie a few days ago. I had heard there was some aircraft in Valkery and that to set the director in the mood Tom Cruise had taken him up in a personal P-51 w barrel rolls and loops prior to shooting the movie. That didn't interest me at all. Just stupid PR.

So there is this close up of the large JU 52 flying from Left to Right across the screen, when all of a sudden I bolt upright in my seat!

There they were - Four (4) C 170 Antennas on the spine of a German JU 52 Tri Motor in 1944 ! Now I was focused on the antennas, they didn't belong there. It startled me. You don't want to drop that bucket of popcorn when you are dedicated to helping fly that big heavy 20,000 LB tail dragger.

Where do you think they got that airplane? I know they worked very hard to get the time period right with many details but I think they missed the antennas.

Has this aircraft ever been shown at OSHGOSH.?

I know these antennas belong on Cessnas not WW11 planes.

What in the hell is a Cessna 170 antenna? If it is a picture of an old JU52 and it is currently flying around, the antennas are probably modern Comm/nav and transponder antennas used to keep the ond airplane compatible with modern air traffic control.
