Dan Wood's 170 in Feb EAA Sport Aviation

Post by Kyle Wolfe »

If you've not yet read it, get a copy of the February EAA Sport Aviation. Nice article on Dan Wood and the work he's done on his '48 170.

Becky and I camped next to Dan at OSH a couple of years ago. He's a super guy and deserves the credit given in this article.

Congrats, Dan!

I agree - A beautiful plane and super guy. Dan went out of his way to pick me up when I was in Atlanta and fly me to breakfast last fall in his '48. Great experience meeting him and flying with him. Dan's plane flies as well as it looks! :D :D I will have to look for the article.

Thank you. I just actually got my copy today. It was alot of fun working with Sparky on the article. Most of the photos were from the EAA photo shoot in 2006.
Thanks for the kind words and hope to see you all at SNF or OSH.

Dan Congradulations on the great article. Its about time the ragwings got a little attention. Seems to me like they are one of the most under appreciated classic planes out there based on resale value. I saw that you have Monarch fuel caps and wondered how much trouble that mod was. Can you do it without cutting the fabric? Bill K

Bill:
You have to put captive nuts under the flange on the tank so I don't see any way to do it without atleast replacing the top fabric. We actually pulled the tanks and put additional drain in the outboard tanks. The caps were field approved.
Thx,
Dan

You might have missed a "tribute" to the "Rag Wing" if you weren't at the convention at Branson last year. Deana, my better half, crafted a hand made quilt, featuring C170 photos, and donated it for a raffle item at the convention. She chose this particular subject because of the 60th anniversary of the C170 and she sorta partial to rag wings (of any type  ) .

Got back home late yesterday from a trip and had my copy of the EAA magazine. I saw that cover and had to immediately read the article on Dan's restortation. Boy, what a beautiful plane :!: Dan, be sure to share your project with us in Duluth at the convention.

Is there any reason no one has posted any pics and words about this member's Cessna 170 at the Int'l Cessna 170 Assn website?

Dan doesn't seem to toot his own horn very much. :D He did post a link to a photo of his 170 here:

Hi Guys:
Thanks for the kind words. I just really enjoy working on it and having people gather around it at the fly-ins. I don't even get mad when kids touch it. Adults should know better! I have had several awards and also an article was written on it in a previous Vintage issue. I remember George mentioning that no one ever mentions the IC170A in the articles so I made sure that Sparky added it. Thanks again for the comments.
