AR Dave wrote:Now there are a whole lot of ways you could plan this trip back to Alaska. If you're going in early June, I'd recommend going to the Convention June 21'st if possible. Take all your paperwork, books, and a pen & paper. The members at the Convention will be more than happy to give your plane a complete inspection nose to tail. They'll tell you about every mod (legal or illegal), what you need to change or add, and the complete history of your plane. They love fresh meat (metal). There are even little things, like "Hey Dave measure those brake lines and I'll send you a new set". They love seeing these planes restored to top condition.
Now if you're going to fly around the Lower 48, and your going west from Georgia. We might plan your layovers. Like Petit Jean, Gastons, my house, and other places in Arkansas. Texas? - I don't know about those folks! But when you decide your basic flight path, let us know, you'll get plenty of suggestions.
I wish I could work the convention into my summer plans but I'm expecting to be in Alaska before then. I'm tempted to change my plans just to get all the expert opinions! Maybe next year......
I had already thought of making a stop at Petit Jean while on the way to AK. You folks sure made it sound nice the last couple of years. I know the official fly in is not planned for this year but is anybody planning to go for a weekend camping trip? Maybe a couple of us could meet there for a day or so. I also have a brother-in-law who prefers fishing to just about anything else so I'm probably going to have to make a trip to Gaston's as well. When it gets a little closer to departure time, I'll be open to other suggestions. A little zig-zagging across the country suits me just fine.
Thanks again for all the compliments. I think I found a nice straight airplane. It was also very nice to deal with a seller who is a man of integrity and honesty. The airplane is as good or better than represented.
I have a recurring dream that I need a baggage door and maybe some more landing lights.........
Keith, that's a really nice looking 170. You will, no doubt, enjoy it and will get a lot of compliments on it. I like that panel upgrade too. I am curious about the engine photo Miles posted. On that #1 cylinder valve cover, is that item protruding from it what was at one time one of those add on air/oil separator return oil thingies? Bring that beauty to the Deluth convention so we can see it up close and personal.
I looked at that protrusion and really couldn't determine what was attached there. I guessed maybe a temp probe of some sort but I'm not really sure.
Wish I could make the convention but I have great plans of spending a lot of time in Alaska this summer and have tentative plans of having the plane in Alaska by mid June. Those plans could always change and if they do I've got the convention as a plan B.
I have in the back of my mind that next summer I might make the convention and then Oshkosh, but that is a long time away. We'll see.
My brother-in-law and I are considering a trip in April from Georgia to Arkansas, south into Texas, back through Southern Mississippi where his kids live, and back to Georgia. When we firm up our plans I'll keep everybody posted as I would enjoy meeting some of you along the way.
Thanks again to everybody for the kind words and compliments.

I assume that protrusion is a fitting through which a return line from an air-oil separator had once been plumbed. The pros and cons of such a device have been debated at length elsewhere in this forum.
If you'd like to replace that valve cover, look up the part number in your IPC (Illustrated Parts Catalog) for your engine, then check cessnaparts.com. Three years ago they were still (relatively) inexpensive.

I'm trying to find out the answer to that. There was a recent report by AOPA (I think it was AOPA, maybe it was EAA) that said Transport Canada was considering a phase in period for transiting airplanes. Other things I've read have implied that the Canadians have said that the rule will be firm. I'm going to have to find out in the next couple of months.
Keith-
I'll be Texas from now until around May 1st except in Alaska March 4-12 for the Iditarod. Come on over and we'll get that Bar-B-Q dinner, I know just the place. And, I'll show you all the different routes to Alaska. But if you're going to get another landing light and baggage door installed, you'll need to stop in Mena, Arkansas and leave the plane for a couple of weeks. Let me know how things shake out.

You're right, there is a phase-in period, according to the latest news I've been able to find, which is here:
I'm following this because (Elt issue)it looks like it might be expensive to comply with. As far as I know the phase in period are for aircraft that fly in the south. Aircraft that operate in the North are required to be fitted by now. I'll double check with COPA, the folks that have been fighting this for sometime up here.

If you can get your hands on some good information about this, it'll be quite a scoop. I hope you can! I've searched the web pretty hard for this, and I couldn't find any information from TC like what the FAA puts out on their web site. And COPA doesn't seem to want to share any information with non-members.
I don't want to bad-mouth Canadians in any way, because I've flown there and found the Nav Canada people to be superb -- friendly, helpful, and deeply concerned for the safety of everyone in their skies. At the same time, I must say that our FAA shows real mastery of the WWW as a way of disseminating information about everything they're doing. They must have lots of smart people working hard at it, from all appearances.
