Since our poor 170's are so limited on space (unless one elects to remove the glove box) I chose to go with Garmin in my plane. I got the GMA 340 audio panel, SL30 NAV/COM, SL 40 COM, and GTX 327 TX. The SL comms are only 1.3 inches tall and the audio panel and tx aren't much more. These fit very nicely into the lower left panel. If you wanted to install a panel mount GPS or an auto pilot, or both, you may have no choice but to put something on the right side. I don't want to go that route so the main concern with purchasing radios was size. The ICOM radios are still available (essentially the same as Garmin SL) but can be hard to find.
Just my two cents.

The ICOM radios are actually essentially the same as Bendix-King KX 97A , with a slight display difference between them. The guts are the same.
