I had this mod installed on my 170 recently. My only complaint is that the reel tends to lock up while sliding the seat rearward. It often takes quite a few tries to get it to release and allow the seat to slide back -- worse when I'm not sitting in it. It's done that right from when it was first installed. I think I might have gotten a defective reel, and I need to take it back to the shop. Has anybody else seen a problem like that?

John, my reel works fine as long as I pull the seat lock handle completely. It'll hang up if I'm just a little lazy pulling. Maybe your setup doesn't give full travel on the cable?

I think the price for the kit is only about $50, so you could buy it and install it yourself, whenever you're ready. You could ask a dealer if they'd give you a free kit....

That's what I would expect. I'm pulling hard on the handle, of course, and the reel doesn't release. The AMT set it up according to Cessna's instructions, so I really suspect I have a defective reel.

I had mine installed last winter and it works fine. I found that pulling the release and lurching forward releases the latch.
I took the seat out for my last annual by just taking the bolt out of the floor plate.

I enjoy the peace of mind of having it there, espcially when the back seat is out.

(I'm disappointed to see our Eldr mentor-hero take an interest in this thing. I would have preferred to beleve he'd take the usual macho-risk of not installing the thing. After all, if it weren't for the excitement of creating an opportunity for personal-extinction... why bother flying? (or riding a Vespa in California freeways at age 80-sumpthing!)

I really have no desire to install this superfluous, wimpy, little gadget, but if I should run across a similarly wimpy possible buyer for my project airplane, it might be a convincing closer.
I developed my personal answer to the "Seat Slide Back" problem when I first heard about it many years ago. It consists of a strong rawhide loop around the pilots scrotum which is then securely fastened to the instrument panel. If the seat were to slide back, believe me, sheer willpower alone will keep the pilot from going with it.

the kit price is $153.11 for either seat I believe. You should be able to get the pilot side kit free from your Cessna dealer, they don't need to install it but if they do they can bill Cessna for the install.

Yes George that must have been weak moment on your part to think BL was actually going to install the system.

I actually thought BL wanted to have one on hand just in case someone should mention it here on the forum thus giving him the perfect opportunity to mention he had just listed the gadget in the Trademart for half price.

It's really tooooo late for anyone to order it and expect to get a Cessna credit. The warning was just for you that have it and haven't acted!

P.S. I want to be there when BL has his seat stop fail and has his home made "KIT" installed. Could probably hear him from Russia! LOL
