FAR 61.17 You will be shocked!! GET YOUR PLASTIC CERT NOW

Post by minton »

Well, Another FAA sneaky!! Far 61.19 Old paper pilot and probably mechanics certificates set to (Expire 3/31/2010) The Feds want use to apply for the new style (What ever that is) before that date. They have a down loadable form, AC Form 8060-56 (10/09) supercedes old form, @ FAA.GOV or just google it. Find FAR text under "Airman Certification" Sure got blind sided on this one!!

I'm calling them tomorrow to get clarification on just what certificates are impacted.

Cheers.

Yeah, I've had the new plastic certificate for 6 years, now.

But, I didn't see anything about it in FAR 61.17

This should take you there: http://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificate ... tificates/

Depending on the publications you read including a thread here this is somewhat old news. But it shouldn't be because lots and lots of folks I'm sure have missed it.

The subject is not anywhere on my topic list when I'm at breakfast with my flying group. I've had plastic for quite some time know in fact I'm on about the third issuance of them. I've mistakenly thought everyone must have them by know.

About a month ago one of the two guys I've flown or gone to breakfast with every weekend for nearly 20 years excitedly announces that he has to get a plastic license or he'll be reduced to a mere walking mortal. (OK he didn't say that exactly but that was the expression he had) Now this friend is not exactly in the dark about things going on in our aviation community so my response was something on the order of "where the heck have you been". Of course in good nature banter he responds "I've been sitting right here next to you, Mr FARs, and you failed to recite this change the the regulations". And the banter went on and on through breakfast and after that as well. :)

The good news is that he applied for a plastic license (on-line I think) and received it in about 10 days. If your current license uses your social security number and you check on the application that your are requesting the new license to get rid of your SSN as your pilots license for security, then the new license is FREE. Other wise it is a few dollars.

It was reported here that only Pilots certificates need to be plastic by March 31, 2010. Mechanics certificates will probably be required at some later date.

Minton was probably a bit shell shocked and copied the wrong FAR. Here is the applicable FAR:

FAR 61.19(h) reads:
Duration of pilot certificates. Except for a temporary certificate issued under §61.17 or a student pilot certificate issued under paragraph (b) of this section, the holder of a paper pilot certificate issued under this part may not exercise the privileges of that certificate after March 31, 2010.

To Change your certificate number from your SSN and request a replacement click here.

Otherwise to Replace your Airmen Certificate click here.

I got my plastic cirtficate at Oshkosh in '05. I believe the FAA had just started to program. My cirtifcate # preceded the era of the SS#. Just last month I upgraded to englsih proficency. I belive the deadline for that in June of this year.

Not a problem Minton. Like I said lots and lots of folks have somehow missed the reports. You probably saw 61.17 mentioned because it is the FAR that describes temporary certificates which will still be paper. I wouldn't be surprise to find the FAA site you saw just plan had it wrong as well.

Bruce,
Thanks for the link to the renewal sight. Just today my pal, Paul called and asked if I knew that the paper certs weren't usable after the end of March. I said I was more than advised. Gave him the link you sent......Brad

When you order your replacement certificate, ... Don't forget to specify to add "English Proficient" in order to comply with foreign rules. (even if you never plan to speak English abroad.)
