It is interesting that some of the trees are leafed out and some have nothing. Do some trees stay green all year long where you live? Nice plane, who's the visitor? If I come, can I stay for lunch too?

Many/most of the deciduous trees on my place are leafing out right now..but to answer your question....Yes!...there are many Quercus Virginiana (Live Oak) on the place, which are not deciduous.

That was Jim Wildharber who made like a tree... he came to eat...and leave!

I stopped in at George's to discuss additional items to further trick out my plane. Looking into making a leather boot to fit around the flap handle base. George made one with the idea to keep goodies from falling into the belly of the plane (like food snacks, paper clips, etc) while flying The one George made looks great and works well. For you cold weather flying guys, it might even keep out some of the cold air

In addition, George and I also checked out the Texas BBQ +/- 3 miles from his door step.

What a great idea! That slot is a pen-magnet, especially when it's the last pen you have in the plane!!! I'd love to see a photo of that. If George did it, you shouldn't be able to tell it wasn't installed at the factory!

It was enroute to Petit Jean that I reminded Jamie why I don't allow eating in the airplane. (No matter how careful one is, inevitably, crumbs will end up in the carpet and seats and mice will find out about it.)
She assured me she would be careful as she opened up the can of cashews......which were immediately dumped onto the tunnel with much of the contents escaping thru the slot into the belly.

Within the quarter a mouse nest of shredded paper-towels was discovered and removed in the right wing root. So I opened up the belly and vacuumed up each and every loose cashew remaining (and washed out the belly and re-applied my anti-mouse repellent ....WD-40.) .

I called Del Lehman and asked him to use a 170 in his hangar for a model and have his favorite interior shop make a flap-handle boot for me out of leather. When it arrived, I trimmed the slot slightly, and installed the boot by cementing it to the underside of the tunnel-cover. (Weldwood Contact Cement or 3M 1300L)

That's really beautiful, George! Del did a fine job on that. I'm assuming there's no issue with the lever not locking in the down position, right? That would be my only concern about something like that.

George..........I think you might have room to the left of the flap handle, and a little foreward of the fuel selector
to install a nice little bracket to hold the cashew can.
That way you can both reach it .......with less spillage ???

Having raised two girls in the airplane, I considered the annual as time to recover all the lost crayons. Funny how they could find their way UNDER the floorboards. I suspect more than one went in by the flap handle. I always smiled when I found one, recalling memories of many flights with the kids.

The only mouse problem I ever had was in the headliner, and that was only once. Perhaps not cleaning the oil from the inside of the belly discouraged them?

No issues at all with flap lever operation, and the cover still comes off and slides up for annual inspection of the latch/ratchet/etc..

The mouse nest found in my airplane after the cashew-event was found in the upper-right wing-root at the eccentric-bushing/rear spar attach. The paper towels it used to make the nest came from a roll under the rear seat. The cashews came from beneath the flap-lever tunnel. Eating in the airplane is still not allowed. Bottled water/black-coffee only. (no snacks, no sweet drinks.)

Those are terry-cloth seat covers protecting the original-style upholstery. NO PINK! (I'm going to have to re-take all those pics using an incandescent lamp I guess.)
