I,m a new member in Mobile,Al . Having owned a C-140 for 15 years , the 170 sure seems more comfortable as I grow older and bigger. What are the cruise speeds of a 170?

Welcome aboard av8r140! I had a 140 for 8 years and really liked it but I like the the room and comfort(?) of the 170. It depends on the particular airplane but I think most are in the 105 Kt range. That is what I always plan with an 8.5 GPH fuel flow. I never burn that high but like a little pad. The extra 15 Kts is not much until you take a long trip.

I'm showing 125mph indicated with full tanks and two people pretty regular. No GPS to say otherwise.

Welcome, always great to see new members. My 170B cruises at 105kts (121mph) and burns about 7.8gph of Avgas.

Over the years, with a stock engine running a 7653 prop at 2450 RPM, I have always flight planned for, and averaged, about 115 mph/100 kts TAS at about 6.8 GPH at about 6000 MSL.

While my plane isn't a 170, unless you count it as a 170 "C", I sure am glad to finally find someone with a 170 that flies at 100 kts (115 mph) since that is what I typically find on Ole Pokey although I usually find my fuel burn to be more like 7.5/8.0 gph. Could be either I run it harder (2550/2600 rpm) or don't average flying as high (or both). Most 170's I have the opportunity to fly with are a bit (some quite a bit) faster than I am :(

Having owned my 120 for 30+ years before I bought a '56 172 tailwheel, I right away missed the tight-turning I did so regularly! 8O
But I'm happy with this upgrade :wink: So much more room and very stable in windy conditions. Well worth the little extra in fuel consumption. I've picked up another 15 mph (mpg?) above the 105 I got with the 120. I turn a 7652 prop at around 2400.
You've also joined a great forum. Loads of info here on everything you can imagine for the 170.

In the above comment, I immagine you meant 15 MPH rather than 15 Mpg. If you're getting 120 MPH at 2400 with a 52 inch prop pitch, I would strongly suggest you use an electronic checker to check your RPM. I suspect your tachometer may be a little slow. 120 Mph sounds kind of fast for a 52 inch pitch at 2400 RPM.

And my gauges are probably as old as the plane! I really don't rely on them, but they are good references!

If you fly with me you will seem much faster as my 140 is only 92knots.

I failed to offer my congratulations at your becoming a C-170 owner/member. Welcome aboard! As others have said, you will find tons of information relating to your 170 on this forum. I sure get my $$ worth as a majority of the information, expecially that relating to later B model 170's, also is relavent to my '56 172 TD (al la "C" model). Great folks and if you choose to attend flyins and conventions you will find its actually a big family. I share a lot of what you said about your 140 as I learned in a '48 140, then later purchased a '50 model 140A. A more docile aircraft, a bit more fun to fly than the 172, but not as fast or as comfortable and not as much room for carrying STUFF :roll:

MIne does exactly the same...105 kts/7.8 gph ...usually cruising at either 6500 or 7500 MSL and 2450 RPM, leaned per the Owner's Manual.
