I have been busy over the 4th but I want to share where I am with this. (A 3g Ipad would be good but...) I have been able to connect my Etrex Legend to my Macbook and download waypoints to either Google Maps or Google earth. This is a direct usb connection thus eliminates the need for Keyspan. I have heard that if you download the needed maps they can be used from cache thus you do not need an internet connection while you are flying. I do have a pdanet connect and use it as a internet connection at the lake. If I tried to use that in the air I would turn on many cell towers and am not sure it would work.
I have searched for Mac software and have found gpsdXConfig.app and GPSUtility.app but have not been able to get them to work. The GPSUtility.app is to connect to gps and display the location information. I will have to do more work with them next week.

It is not a problem to use Garmin software to upload and download waypoints, routes and tracks. But I've never been able to use a Garmin connected either through serial or usb to do live tracking with Garmin Software. I've not been able to do live tracking using Google Maps or Google Earth because internet access is required for the maps. Theoretically you may be able to cache the maps with Google but I've not been successful doing it yet.
The GPSUtility.app is an app for IPhone/Touch/IPad but they have a computer version both Vista and Mac. It is a utility I've been using with my bluetooth Dual XGPS150 on my Mac and I've used the app on the companies Touch. All it does really is tell you the status and position of the GPS and if your connected to the internet it will display your position using Google Maps or Earth.
