The weather on the news tonight says we briefly hit a HEAT INDEX of 120 degrees around 2 pm.....broke and all time record.

Only in S.W. Minnesota wait awhile ....come December it will be 120 #$%$# degrees BELOW zero

As bad as it seems, at least we have had rain...I would imagine Texas has all but dried up and blown away

Here in North Texas we have had 17 record days, 54 over 100 deg. and as many as 28 in a row of over 100. We are having to keep a close eye on feed and water for the cattle, and many people are having to sell out already. The next 7 days are 105-108 hi and 78-82 lo, and no rain. I tried a rain dance but the dust choked me out.

It's so bad down here in Central Texas that mosquitos have been seen carrying canteens and catfish have been found in mud-holes with tick-infestations. There was a news story in Houston that reported a fire hydrant was seen attempting to bribe a dog.
The Baptists have begun to baptize by sprinking.... The Methodists have started using wet-wipes.... and the Presbyterians are issuing rain-checks. My Catholic-cousin Priest said Mass last Sunday and prayed for the wine to be turned back to water.

My grass runway is now a straw-runway and I'm afraid to shredd it for the upcoming Aug 13 fly in for fear the blades might hit a rock, cause a spark and set it on fire.

I set my grass on fire yesterday. Grass is dry and brown, and I was just trying to get rid of that unsightly stem grass. Got off the mower to roll up a garden hose, and the front discharge exhaust had the grass on fire in less than a minute. I decided the grass didn't look so bad.

Broke record here yesterday at 111 actual temp here at the airport. Tony said when he left his house after lunch, his tempometer said 118, and there were several reports of 115 and 116 from around the county, but they are not official readings. Fort Smith, about 50 miles north set an all time record of 115 (previously 113, set in 1936), and their daily record (previously 107, set in 1896!!!) The low temp last night at the lodge on the mountain was 86! Temperature inversion??? It was 81 at 4am at my house; about 1600 feet less elevation than the lodge. This is very unusual for us to be this hot, this dry, this long. Last time was dust bowl era. I don't remember 1980 being this bad, but I was a youngster that didn't pay much attention to the significance of the weather that summer, I just remember is was hot for long time. And those T-shirts "I Survived the Summer of 1980".

If those temps didn't cause the County Commisioners to call an Emergency Meeting and overturn the Dry County Law, I don't know if there is any chance. How does moonshine over ice taste?

It seems very wrong, that a person can't buy a beer in a 'free' country. But, at the same time, the fed left it to the states to decide, and some states left it to the counties. Unfortunately, I live in the latter. I can respect that, although we're missing out on alot of potential revenue.
The moonshine (properly distilled) has very little taste, and is great on ice, mixed half-n-half with your favorite juice

The local volunteer fireman stopped by to visit the other day and visited.....while sitting in his idling car...on my dry grass.


When I mentioned it, he said he'd forgotten that only two days previously he'd been called out to a grass fire set by a pickup truck.

I think all of us in the southwest are seeing record temps and lack of rain this summer. DFW has set numerous records for high temps both during the daytime and the high lows of a morning. Noticed one night at 10:00 pm news/weather where the current temperatur at Addison Airport (ADS) was 102 No rain for months either. Farmers & ranchers are really having it bad as well. We in the Granbury, TX area have seen several 110-111 temps, at least at the airport (GDJ), almost that high here at the house. Looks like we could equal or surpass the record heat of 1980. We are ready for late fall & winter. Then we can complain about the cold Don't recall the comment verbatum, but I think it was Will Rogers who once said "Weather is something everybody talks about and no body does anything about it"

We didn't want to leave Alaska in the summer but Ina and I went down to Dallas for my mom's 90th birthday last week. We knew it was going to be hot but didn't expect 111F!

I think our AC unit may be undersized Working hard to maintain 80. But, in the 11 years since we built and moved in, we haven't had anything close to this scenerio. I didn't sleep to good last night, so I got up at 3am, put on some shorts and boots, turned the coffee on. Read a bit. Get coffee, put on headlamp, go outside for a walk. I looked at the thermometer. It was 90 degrees at about 3:20 this morning!!! I poured out the coffee and got a beer. Went for my walk, picked a few tomatoes. It was amazing how warm they were. Everything is just heat soaked. My water pipes to my outdoor hydrants are buried the recommended 18 inches; this is the first time I've ever gotten a seemingly never ending flow of warm water. We have a well, so the water faucet right at the well still gives 58 degree water. I went and bought extra garden hoses (if anybody remembers my story 2 winters ago; I broke 3 frozen hoses), so I can get the cold water to the barn. For now, until the heat breaks, we are watering 3 times a day, and rolling the hoses up after each use and putting them in the shade.

Looking like we might get under 100 by the weekend. Many new records set for the heat, and we have only had 3.25 inched of rain this year. Hope everyone on the east coast faired the storm ok. Please send us some rain!!!!
