OT: New Resident

After selling our beloved 170 a year ago, our hangar is occupied once again. 12 months, 26 days and 11 hours after I flew N49CP off our strip for the last time, N3443K came home. I have always wanted one of these...now to save for another 170 to share the hangar.

Wonder where you might have gotten the idea you needed a Cub and 170. Hmmm if my count is right you will be the fourth here with a Cub and a 170 (after you get another 170 )

Tell us more about the Cub.

Lovely! Traveling with a Cub and camping gear is not a problem -- you just get smaller, lighter stuff, and less of it! There's nothing like X-C in a J3. I flew mine to Alaska once, then did it in the 170. There was no comparison -- the Cub trip was many times more interesting and fun.

I got my PPL in a C-150, but I tell folks that I actually learned to fly a couple of years later doing my tailwheel training in a J-3. There's nothing like bringing a new baby home for the first time, whether it be a child or an airplane. I've done each twice, and and I'll never forget any of them.

For years now, I've been telling people the exact same thing. It seemed to take for ever to learn to handle the Cub, but when I look back at my logbook it wasn't really that long. But it did change everything after that!

Bruce, it is a '46 with a C-85. It was restored in 2006 and has less than 200 hours on the restoration and overhaul. We bought her from a local gentleman who flew her while he finished his Legend Cub. The video is of my first flight coming home from Wichita Valley airport here in Wichita Falls. they did an awesome job on the fabric and paint. We should have many years of trouble free flying.

Thanks for all the kind words. As I said, a J-3 has been on the bucket list of planes forever. We gave over 200 rides in the 170. I'm going to have to work hard to match that number with only one extra seat, but I'll try!

Bruce you will just love that C-85. I was going to guess a 46. Do you know why? Because that is when most of them were made.

If you want to know what the C-85 is doing for you, limit your RPM to about 2100 on takeoff.

There is only one problem with a Cub. You just won't ever want to get rid of it. It is a ball to bomb around the local area using the least amount of full. There is no problem with parts and or support.

And if there was any aircraft on the ramp that will get more looks than a nice 170, it is a Cub in ANY condition. Fact is the rougher they get the better they are.

What is the difference between the numbers on the tail and the numbers under the wing? (look at the picture in the original post, it will enlarge if you click on it) The second Cub with the tail number 33495 has a number on it's wing that ends with a 6!
