I was glad to see the "Aging Aircraft" in the First quarter 2012 170 News. I had to laugh at Bruce for mentioning carrying spare this and that aboard. I think I have mentioned that in the past and the conversation went south from there
All kidding aside, when referencing those examples, it's becomming more apparent all the time the need for more attention to detail in "High Stress" areas of the ol bird. The days of annual inspections being conducted over a cup of coffee should become a thing of the past.
How about a good inspection EVERY 100 hours and Annually...just like they're supposed to get?

Any aircraft used for commercial purposes must receive 100 hour inspections (unless on an alternately approved program such as a progressive, etc..).... and in case you didn't notice....each annual inspection is based upon a 100 hour inspection....so, even if your airplane is not used commercially, it receives a 100 hour inspection at least annually.

CASA is the Civil Aircraft Safety Authority in Australia (equivilant to your FAA). Most of the horror pictures in this presentation came from aircraft that had passed all required inspections.

Yes I know that and I thought you did but you did not make the differentiation between commercial use and private use. Just wanted to make sure everybody was one the same page.
Aging aircraft inspections center around high stress areas, corrosion, cycles, etc. and are predicated on operational time accumulation as well as calendar time and operating environments among others. They can either be incorporated into the normal inspection cycle or become a "Special inspection" detailing a specific area or components.These type of situations were not normally addressed in such detail in GA until now. I personally am glad to see it come about.

That's an excellent question!
To SOME owners... a "good" inspection is one which finds nothing requiring money to fix.
To ME... a "good" inspection is one that finds anything WRONG with the airplane and brings it to the attention of the owner! A "good" inspector is one who can FIND things and has the integrity to report it in writing to the owner. A "good" mechanic is one who knows several ways to make an appropriate repair and can offer an owner those choices. (An EXCELLENT inspector/mechanic is one who can guide the owner into the most cost-effective decisions consistent with safety of operation. HE is also known as a TRUE FRIEND.)

Myself being an 47+ year A&P have cleaned up many a mess left behind by those long distance, friendly (over coffee)annuals that I mentioned. You all have seen examples them. I feel for those after the fact owners that buy them only to find all of the "Oversights" to clean up. That is what I meant, not $$$$ 25 hour annuals $$$$$$.

Just did the IA renewal. Listening to Cessna tell about all new SID coming down the pike. Seems like most of the stuff they have is already well known by anyone that has been paying attention The rudder torque-tube break was one that I had not seen or heard of. Did we have a representative from the Association involved?
