Hello,
I am new to flying, working on my ppl and just bought N4244V A 1948 170. The previous owner provided me with one of your publications from the 80s. It was really well written and provided lots of information. I just wanted to say Hello and that I appreciated all the information I found here prior to purchase.

Bruce,
I grew up over in Chalfont not too far from you. Of course that was about 20 years ago.
Aryana,
I have been learning in a 172I , I am going to just transition to training in the 170. My goal was always a tail wheel endorsement after I finished my ppl. As for why the 170? When I was a kid I talked my way into going flying with a neighbor that had an early 180. The 180 is a very nice plane but the 170 has a far more classic look to it. I was looking at all the standard first airplanes to buy, the 150 was too small, 172 was a bit pricey unless the engine was near TBO. I really wanted a tail wheel in the long term, so the 170 it was.
It happened that my company began leasing a few hangers at the local airport for an upcoming project so I asked around if there were any 170s for sale. N4244V was for sale as the owner a had unfortunately lost his medical . As he told me it was the one year wonder, made from 140 parts, with a rag wing and a fuel pump. What's funny is he flew it for more than 20 years with no fuel pump! Makes you wonder how much of a difference it really made.
I'll add soe photos when I get time this weekend.

Jon, you are right Chalfont is just a stones throw from my place. My mother and that side of my family is from Chalfont. I grew up in Souderton and now live in Franconia just outside of Harleysville. I'm pretty familier with Chalfont.
Like to see pictures of course but unless youv'e actually joined the TIC170A (and we upgrade your forum privileges) you won't be able to post pictures unless you host the image on the web somewhere and use the (img)[/img] tags.
The 170 is a great airplane. Many folks have flown for years without the fuel pump. But without it the airplane couldn't meet the required standard for certification. And so it is a required piece of equipment even though you may never put the aircraft in an atitude long enough to require it.

Bruce,
I joined on the 3rd. Paid all my dues via PayPal. If you don't find it or the application let me know.
It's a small world. I have a brother who lives over Souderton, for now, the company he has worked for the past 20 years was purchased not to long ago by some of our fine college graduates these days. Within months the writing was on the wall, move the manufacturing to china, assemble the pumps in chile or Mexico . I always wonder is there a class in an MBA program that teaches that ?

Yes Jon your certainly did join and all is well with that process. Joining TIC170A and then having forum privileges upgraded is a manual process. Because not every TIC170A member uses the forum and there is no requirement for one to actually use a real name to register at the forum, we don't spend the time with every application to try to determine if a new member uses the forum. We instead rely on the new members sending a note to the webmaster asking for the privilege upgrade.Alwine00775 wrote:Bruce,

You should note you now have an avator and full TIC170A member privileges here at the forum. And you will now be able to upload and attach photos to posts.

Welcome, Jon!
If you're flying out of Yucca Valley, you're only a little over an hour from me by 170. If you haven't done your long cross country yet, come up to Tehachapi (KTSP) and I'll sign your logbook and buy you lunch.

Miles,
Thanks for the invite. Once I get some time in I will take you up on it. Every time I drive though your area I imagine how it would look from the air. So much better than the desert. It looks like my insurance should be in place tomorrow or Monday.
I have some ok pictures to post. The weather here has been less than ideal. If my insurance isn't in effect I'll shoot some outside of the hanger on Saturday , if it is in effect I might be too busy flying !
If you or any other members are down this way I usually have an open spot in my hanger, and an
Vehicle around if you want to see joshua tree etc. from the ground rather than the air.
Only bad thing: no fuel at L22 at this time.

Might just take you up on that some time. Fuel is $5.27 currently in Tehachapi, and I shouldn't have a probem with making it a round trip w/o refueling. Fuel is $5.33 at Big Bear, but that can be a difficult place to climb out of in a 170 with full fuel. I'd rather head over to Banning at $5.43.Alwine00775 wrote:...If you or any other members are down this way I usually have an open spot in my hanger, and an
