Tandem Seat 170

Post by W.J.Langholz »

Anybody ever make a tandem seat 170? I was sitting in 1 lastnight and slid to the middle........it sure would be nice! Put a seat rail all the way back, put in some 206 seats.....like a poor mans birddog ...or a fat mans champ :D Throw in some of those high compression pistons and perk up that o-300 now your talking :D :D
Are you hearing me blueldr.....

FAA aside, this wouldn't be too difficult and you'd finally be able to see all the intstruments in the pre'53 models.

Modify a seat to straddle the tunnel and use one rail per side.
Cut and weld the control column for a center yoke (although a stick would be cooler)
Move the throttle and mixture to the left side.
Re-engineer te rudder pedals too.

But, what does this get you? The 170 is already a GREAT 2 place airplane

You can always squeeze a few more horsepower out of the old O-300 by installing Continental C-85 engine pistons with chamfered tops to raise the compression slightly.

On my old Harley, I had a shop shave a few millimeters or so off the deck of the heads to increase compression to 9.5:1.

That made a big difference...along with a new cam.

they already have a tandem 170....
it's called an L-19...
and if they'll quit painting it green...
( olive drab actually, to match the personality of some owners)
and put some red paint on it they'll actually go pretty fast!

Yeah, The L-19 has a stick too. Do you think it will go faster if you paint a shark on it, like a P-40?

Can I use that as approval basis to hang an O-470 on my plane? 8O

An L-19 won't go much faster no matter how much hp you bolt on it. The SM-1019, which is an Italian military turbine L-19 clone with a 317 hp Rolls Royce turbine engine (and ugly square tail) will only go 110k at 18-20gph. But,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, it climbs at 2000fpm!

OK, so put the 317 hp R/R on the 170... Now that would be something
