Feb 22, 2012, Flew to Gaston's (1 hr flight) - Poppa Bill (Fishing Guide) picked us up - caught 80+ trout (3 Browns / 77+ Rainbows) - Traci put on a great fish fry back at the house.

That does it! I'm planning to fly from GA to OK the latter half of April. I was trying to decide weather to make it a one day trip or stop somewhere. I'm now planning a stop at Gaston's. I've been seeing these posts about it every since I bought a plane and I haven't made it yet.

Dave, I'll let you know when I firm up my plans. If you are in Arkansas that week maybe we can meet for lunch.

I'm assuming that some of that catch was catch and release? What would anyone do with 80 fish otherwise?

Looks like I'll be home April 11 - 22. Gaston's would be a nice stop over for your trip. I was really thinking (while on the river) about how nice a 170 flyin would be up there. Having the trout fishing and all. Historians tell me that the 170 club had a lot of flyin's, at Gastons, back in the day. Let me know!

Bluedr - I think we took home 12-15 trout. The ones that were injured from the hook. Limit is about 6 a piece.

Now in two weeks my family & and sisters family are going to Ponca, AR. About 10-15 miles West of Jasper, on the upper end of the Buffalo. The Lodge, we reserved the whole place, sleeps 22. It's not that far from Harrison (airport). I guess this is my favorite little mountain town in Arkansas. Reason I'm mentioning this (Scott), I'm wondering about it as a midyear meeting place. Gar could Zip-Line there!

I have finally reached a point where I can show off my plane. Be advised there are areas which I am still polishing... and polishing... and polishing. Did I mention that I'm spending a lot of time polishing?

Great pictures! I see the O-300 doesn't have any problems getting you out of those strips. I have been wanting to go to Mineral Canyon but always think twice when I consider what's under the hood!!!

I had at least 3/4 fuel, my 115lb wife, 80lb dog, 15lb tool bag, and myself at 210lbs. We did fine getting out of Mineral Canyon, it's actually one of the longer strips out there at 2000'. Most of the strips I went into I had my wife and dog aboard. The only ones they wern't with me for was Dirty Devil (1279' long and 4153' elevation) and Simplot (1500' long and 6245' elevation), I just happened to be alone when I went there. When we went into Mexican mountain we even had all the rest of our camping gear and water, probably close to another 80lbs and it was about 70 degrees. I also have an 80'' seaplane prop and a Sportsman STOL kit, both of those help with getting off the ground a little sooner and climbing a little better. The 26'' bushwheels and baby bush tail wheel also helped a lot, some of these strips were very soft and bumpy and I couldn't have done a few of them with the old 8.00s and scott 3200. I think you would be just fine going into Mineral Canyon. Just go light and early your first time and you'll see it's not such a big deal. It can be intimidating staring at 1000' cliffs all around on take off just remember you can stay over the river and fly through the canyons for a little while to gain altitude.
