Last year I retired from a software development career, so I too know something about outsourcing. My experience was different from yours, though. Our company had a terrific team in Bangalore, the likes of which I don't think you could put together in this country for any money. They were highly disciplined engineers who not only wrote software exactly to my specifications in record time, they documented the design in perfect English, as well as writing and executing a comprehensive test plan. The trick to get good work out of them was to write very clear and detailed specifications -- try to anticipate and answer all the questions they might have about what it is you want. I think that's simply the necessary prequisite for good software, but in my experience there are few shops in this country that work that way. The more leading-edge and entrepreneurial the company, the less likely it is to happen.
