One other thought. On that heading, he would have crossed the east end of Blackfork Mtn, another east-west mtn approx 2 miles north of the Rich mtn crash site, and it would have been almost exactly where the Convair crashed in the early 70's. Flying that low, maybe he clipped some trees on Blackfork. Bent prop, vibration, pull power? Maybe rammed something in to the induction?
