Pre buy

Post by Markwestover1 »

I'm considering a prebuy for a 170
in the Fargo ND area. Anyone have a lead on a good A&p in that area?

There is a good mechanic over at Detroit Lakes, MN with 170 experience. There is no definition for a "pre-buy", it means whatever the inspector wants it to mean and has no legal basis.

At a minimum, have a full Annual Inspection done by an IA, inspection only with no corrective action or maintenance and a logbook entry including a list of discrepancies which can be used in negotiating the price with the seller. Generally the seller would be responsible for airworthiness deficiencies which could be corrected before the plane leaves the shop.

If the seller will not agree to an annual inspection that you pay for or split with the owner if one is due, walk away.

I'd think twice about the one for sale on Barnstormers in Fargo. 28,000 TTAF is a lot of hours! 8O

Or maybe it is a typooo. It would be the first question I asked the owner and if it is true I'd have to consider what owning the highest time Cessna 170 in existence is worth.
