I just ordered two new fuel caps for my airplane. I checked FAR 43 under "preventive maintenance" to see if I could legally install them. It says that I can replace fuel strainers, prefabricated fuel lines, and anti-misfueling devices-nothing about fuel caps! I am not going to take this literally since I replace my fuel caps everytime I refuel, just this time I will replace them with new ones.

I doubt that would be a problem as long as they are genuine Cessna/approved caps and not aftermarket or some "Stant" or whatever from NAPA.
If they are aftermarket'PMA (or STC'd such as Monarch or some other similar situation) it would need at least a logbook entry by a A&P I think.

Hi
I think my fuel caps are leaking fuel as im using more fuel than I should be I have a cessna 170 Ragwing both tanks are original Big and small and the seals, one old cork and one a suspect hand cut rubber.
can you buy new seals for them or must u replace the entire cap. They are a screw on type cap. Where can you get them from and what is a good way of checking for the leak (there is no magor stain )
Steve,
How much fuel are you using? At a power setting of 2400 RPM and an altitude of about 5,000 ft. with the mixture leaned to smooth above first roughness, you should be using about seven (7) US gal./hr. Be sure to check your tachometer for accuracy.
BL I Used 86 litres about 21 US gallons on a 2 hr flight with 2 landings at at about 1500 to 2000 ft at 2400 R.P.M Indicated Mixture rich indicated speed of around 98 knots
170's average abot 8 US gals per hour. Only one flight and one fill-up isn't much of a check for fuel flow. You should check it over several flights.

Steve,
That's a lot of fuel to burn in two hours alright. Are you pretty sure the tanks were filled to the same level? Actually, one flight is a poor test. It would be much better to get a check on about fifteen or twenty hours of varied types of flights. The speed seems about right for the power setting, but I would suggest that full rich is using more fuel than necessary. However, it should not push the fuel burn up to what you experienced. I think you had best get another check using more hours and leaning the mixture.
Is there an echo in Spicewood?? Must be a big house, it took a whole minute to return.

I'm surprised it took that long, since I'm in DFW.
I've noticed from time to time the upload of a msg post does not register. My computer screen is simply hung up on the <submit> page. In that case I've had to click on <submit> again. It's rare but it happens. Sometimes it submits the msg once,...sometimes it submits a double msg post. I usually catch it if I wait until I see my msg reappear on screen, but if I'm in a hurry sometimes I just go onto something else and miss it. (I also frequently discover that the same thing must happen to others, as I sometimes find double-postings, and use the moderator's function to clear/delete the duplicate msg.
