Tail wheel Endorsement Finally!

Post by Mark Harwood »

I bought my 170A just over a year ago. Had engine problems right out of the gate on my "275 SMOH" engine :cry: . In January of this year after a rebuilt engine and many other repairs, I was able to start flying it again. We got a few hours on the rebuild before working on the landings. Things seem to be working well and I got my tailwheel endorsement today. The first time i saw this plane for sale I knew I had to have it. I did not expect it to take so long or cost SO much but I still am happy to own a 170. :D Many thanks to you folks for your input when I have needed it! I am still a 170 newby but I sure learned a lot in the last year. Can't wait to get more time in the bird :D Mark 1949A 9183A

Now the fun starts!
Enjoy!
Get out there and fly as often as possible (within your personal limitations).

Got my tailwheel "endorsement" in 1988 when I bought my C 140. My friend, who had a 140, flew it back from where I bought it. We then flew together for 2 days and I did 6-8 landings. He was not an instructor but had a lot of tailwheel time. He had to leave for a 3 month school and told me I might as well go ahead and fly because the landings were not to bad. I only scared myself a couple time that first year. I had been taxi qualified, as a mechanic, on DC 3's which helped considerably.

I learned to fly in a PA-12 pryer to 1992. So my endorsement was "grandfathered". But I still took some time with Dad to transition to the 170. :wink:

Just as a matter of interest,...
FAR 61.3
(2) Except as provided in paragraph (d)(3) of this section, no person other than the holder of a flight instructor certificate issued under this part with the appropriate rating on that certificate may—

(i) Give training required to qualify a person for solo flight and solo cross-country flight;

(ii) Endorse an applicant for a—

(A) Pilot certificate or rating issued under this part;

(B) Flight instructor certificate or rating issued under this part; or

(C) Ground instructor certificate or rating issued under this part;

(iii) Endorse a pilot logbook to show training given; or...

Of course, FAR 61.31 does not require tailwheel endorsements for pilots who logged PIC tailwheel time before April 15, 1991.

So.... your friend was not authorized to give you the training....and you actually were not PIC until after your friend got out of the airplane and you flew it yourself.....but since it occurred in 1988...you didn't/don't need any endorsement. :P

Yes George I know all that but in 1988 I DID NOT NEED an instructor to fly a tailwheel aircraft! I just thought it prudent to have someone along who was familiar with the aircraft and it's characteristics. I tried to find an instructor to fly with but the only one who had ANY tailwheel time said he would not do it because he hadn't flown a tailwheel for more than 10 years.
