fly-in

Post by jon s blocker »

Richard, are you going to the Under The Wire Fly-In, in Louise, Tx., in September? I know you are a round engine pilot, and they have several there. If you go I would like to meet you. Missed you at the Tail-Dragger fly-in earlier this year. Jon

Jon-
We'll be at the C-195 convention Sept 20-23 in Wichita the same weekend as the Under The Wire Fly-In. It's the 60th anniversary of the 195 and Jack Pelton, Pres and CEO of Cessna bought Dwayne Wallace's old 195 and won a Lindy at Oshkosh with it this year. Dwayne was the principal designer of the 195 and probably had a lot to do with the 170 design also. Mort Brown was an original C-195 test pilot who signed off my airplane and is coming to the banquet to speak. Cessna is a major sponsor of the convention this year.

We will be flying the 195 on up to the Lee Bottom Fly-in after that.

It looks like at least two of us from Minnesota will be flying 170s to Lee Bottom next month -- Dennis Hoffman, and myself. Let's see if we can get a parking area for the 170s and friends!

Seeing this fly-in on the St Louis Sectional caught my eye enough to Google it up. But 482 miles is a bit far with HS Volleball in full swing though.

Thomas,
May I suggest you look at Fort Smith, Mt. (5U7) as a possible fishing stop. Bighorn river is excellent fly fishing for rainbow. Look at it on airnav http://www.airnav.com/airport/5U7 and you can see how close it is to the river from the airport.
If you would like more info PM me.

I agree with Curtis. We flew right over Ft. Smith/Yellowtail Dam/Big Horn River in June on the way to Galveston for the convention. It's just southeast of Billings. It is a beautiful area and judging from the number of drift boats on the river, very popular for fishing. We wanted to land but we had just departed Billings and wanted to cover a lot of miles that day.

The picture is looking southwest up the Big Horn River toward Yellowtail Dam with Ft. Smith at the top left just below the bluffs. The airport is just across the river below the red cliffs and just left of that brown field that kinda looks like Oklahoma.

The Lee Bottom Fly-in on Saturday Sept 29 is the same weekend as The Gathering of P-51s and Legends, http://www.gml2007.com/ at Columbus, OH airshow on Sept 28, 29, 30. Columbus is just about 150 miles from Lee Bottom. It should be easy to attend both events if the weather cooperates.
