What kind of steel is used in early gear legs. ( what alloy ? )
What hardness ????

The main gear legs are made of SAE-6150 chrome-vanadium spring-steel with a vanadium content of approx. .18-percent and chrome content of approx 1-percent.. They are treated and hardened on their leading edges and lower surfaces by a shot-peening process which I posted previously at: http://cessna170.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4973

Yeah, that's a no-brainer. The executive sec'y always sends me a reminder of when my renewal is due.

George do you know what the hardness number would be ???( rockwell or brinnell )

I don't know Cessna's specification but a common spring-industry spec for chrome-vanadium springs is C41-55 (rockwell).

I can't remember where I read this but I believe the early gear was 4000 or 4100 steel (moly or chromoly) which was changed to 6150 for the later (lady legs) gear.

I picked up a set of legs from a '52B that got close to a fire so I want to get them
re-tempered and checked for cracks.............I can do this locally that's why I'm
asking about alloy and hardness..................

This might help, here are the fabrication specs for the older symmetrical main landing gear last revised in 1950.

These specs do not apply to the later "lady legs". I have never been able to find the specs for them. Anybody have the later model gear specs? If so, please share.

Richard, if you can scan that into a PDF file and upload it, it would allow a complete set to be downloadable AND it would improve the clarity of the document.

Also, right -clicking and selecting "print" only produces a blank document, while enlarging and printing only produces a quarter-page document, while using Microsoft Image printing makes such a poor copy it's unreadable. (at least on my setup)

The best would be if Richard has this document and can scan it better into a PDF. In the mean time I've uploaded the exapnded images and created a PDF that all should be able to download and print.
