My Birthday

Post by W.J.Langholz »

Today is my birthday. For the last 6-7 years I take a vacation day from work on my birthday and do just what ever i feel like doing when I wake up in the morning. That's what I did today. I did have 3 newborn calves when I woke up to tke care of, cleaned out the calving pens and put new straw down. By then it was time for a afternoon nap :D. Finished off the day going out to eat with my wife and son. They teamed up this year and splurged on a present for me ....they bought me a "Light Speed Zulu" headset. can you believe that, bluetooth and all!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D
The best present however came from son who took the time out of his busy college life and bought me one of the nicest Halmark cards I have ever seen....he wrote a few lines in it also.........had to fight back the tears....can't let him think the old man is getting soft or something ya know.
It was a grand day for sure!

You still informed him the Light Speed Zulu headset was off limits didn't you? :)

Once again I'm struck by the vast diversity of life of association members. I can't recall but am pretty sure I never got up on my birthday to clean out a calving pen what ever the heck that is. :?

Happy Birthday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WILLIE!

Guess you get to share your birthday with those 3 new calves. 8) It's a good thing your birthday is in the spring, eh? You sure couldn't have birthday cake with THAT many candles indoors, could you?

Say "HI" to John for me; I hope his college work is going well.

Bruce
I'll try and help you out here a little but let me first explain, not all farms calve out cows like I do. I only have around 50 cows so I can spoil them a bit more than a big rancher.
All my cows will give birth in a climate controlled area. There are 3 basic areas in my barn.
1st area is a "Pre Delivery Loafing Area"
This is where all the cows that are close to calving are sorted off from the others and have their own area where they are pampered (plenty of fresh food and water)and kind of just hang out until they give birth. Close to and intensive care area just incase there are any issues.

2nd Area is the "Calving Pen" Once the birth is done cow and calf are moved into a calving pen where they are monitored for 24-48 hours to make sure the new mother is ok and is nursing the new born. This area is cleaned daily and new straw is used for bedding (all done by hand with a pitch-fork) keeps you in shape. Don't need to go to the Gym

3rd area is "The Step Down Area" This is were all the new mothers are co-mingled together and monitored for another 48-72 hours to make sure a new mother can pick out her own baby beforre the go out to the big pasture.

My cows are all spoiled and get hand fed every day. This also is my therapy session everyday, keeps me from going insane from dealing with my town job everyday :D

Anyway after working 60-65 hours a week I come home and do some small farming to keep me out of the booz hall at night. Make a little side money so I can do this crazy "Flying" thing.

If April 7 ends up with any form of special recognition in the next issue of the 170 Calendar, Doug is going to be in BIG TROUBLE!
