The January TIC170A Fly Paper arrived today. There are a couple of C-170s advertised therein. One of them a '52 B model for $22,500 has got to be really good deal for someone wanting a C-170. Makes me sorry as hell that I've simply run out of years. At that price, you can afford to do a lot to it.

If you feel that aviation gas is too expensive, may I be so bold, in view of many of our members, to recommend that you acquire and use an STC permitting the use of automobile gas (mogas) in your C-170. I fully realize that there a good many members that would completely give up flying rather than use mogas.
I have been an advocate, (read cheap assed SOB), and user of mogas for well over SIXTY years and have NEVER had one moment of problem or concern while flying on it., even that unauthorized product containing alcohol. Believe me, I have saved a hell of a lot of money over all those years.

Aryana hit it on the nose. It depends on what YOU want to do.
If you want to own and fly 170 then look into buying. You already know they are not land-o-matic airplanes. As far as just getting the PPL in what you know, and get over that hurdle. I can tell you there is no better incentive to completing something your rating than owning a $40k piece of equipment you can not operate that has on going expenses.
The biggest hurdle I see is finding an instructor who is qualified, both knowledge,experience wise, covered by insurance and willing to instruct in the 170.

Thanks for the ongoing replies.
I have an instructor who can give taildragger instruction, and he qualifies based on the insurance requirements. I just have a hard time scheduling with him since he is so busy. He'd have motivation since he's brokering the 170 deal, hahaha.
How much does a standard pre purchase inspection go for? Ballpark.

Do some searches on this forum about prebuy inspections.
Best advice I never took: Get it annual'd by the IA that will be DOING your annuals as a condition of the purchase.

Way back east in TN.
After this week I should only have 6-7 more hours of required
training. I'll just stay in the 172 and obsess quietly about the 170..

The price of insurance for training in a 170 will be offsetting to the price of completion in the 172. I'm in favor of option #1. (Risk someone ELSE's airplane during training, and put the wear/tear of training on THEIR machine.)
