I've joined your exalted ranks

Post by DaveF »

Today I became the proud owner of N3455C, a 1954 170B. It's got a 180hp O-360 and CS prop. The airplane has lived in CO, UT, and NV its whole life and is clean and shiny throughout.

I would like to have bought a completely original airplane and missed two different ones by one day each. Over the past year I spent way too much time surfing Barnstormers, TAP, and the For Sale forum here, but wouldn't you know it, the airplane I bought was right down the road in Boulder. It's not all original but had so many of the things I wanted in an airplane that I couldn't turn it down. With a home field elevation of 5100 I'm pretty sure I'll appreciate the extra horsepower on every takeoff.

I'd like to publicly thank Bruce Sdunek and Miles Bowen for volunteering to look at airplanes that came up for sale in their neighborhoods.

Here's a picture of me with the two former owners, both UAL pilots. I'm the guy in the middle, and I was smiling a whole lot more than you might guess from that picture. Actually, the guy on my left is retaining a small interest in the airplane so that he can continue to fly. Can you believe it, his wife didn't want to sell.

SteveF

Welcome :!: You sure bought yourself a beautiful plane. Why don't you think about flying it to the Duluth Convention, with your airline partner, next year 8) As highly modified as the plane is you might go home with the Best Modified 170B trophy   Or, how about flying to the Petit Jean annual fly in in Arkansas. Check out the 170 website on these two activities 8) Looking forward to visiting with you and seeing your plane.

Dave, welcome to the IC170A. Its a great organization with a lot of super fine folks (and a few old grouches--gotta love em though  ). Your new plane sure looks nice and yes, you will appreciate the extra hp & csp when getting off the runway or climbing even in the flatlands. Let us know how your progress is with getting to know her  And as George said, plan to come to Petit Jean and/or the 2009 convention so we can meet you and your new purchase.

Seriously :P Welcome to the "clan". No doubt you will have many hours of exciting time in the air and of course many hours of excruciating pain in the wallet when you filler up! Where are basing your plane? (Aside: We used to live in Federal Heights when My Dad worked for AEC in Denver. This was in the early '50s, so I imagine lots has changed.)

BTW: BE VER CAREFUL AN DONT BEND THE BIRD

Thanks to all. This is my fourth airplane, and I think it's the one I wanted all along. Now I get to learn to fly all over again. I should be good enough for a long cross-country to Petit John or Duluth next year.

Gary, you wouldn't recognize the Denver area now. I've lived here for almost 30 years and I can't believe how much it's changed. You ought to come back -- we don't get hurricanes up here, just the occasional tornado.

Whatsamatter w' you, Dave! What're you tryin' ta do, lower the proppity values up there? Why do you think Loueasyanna swamp-land is so wuthless! You think it's 'cause of the FISHIN'? Hell No! It's because of the naybers! The reason God sends Hurricanes is to chase him OFF and it STILL don't work! I had to pray for the last one to come to Houston to keep him outta TEXAS!
